"We are standing in Utrecht next to the Dom Tower. We have come together as a work group "Bible in Sign Language” with the goal of eventually translating the Bible from written Dutch into Dutch Sign Language.
Wycliffe Bible Translators has already completed Bible translations in various places around the world, in various languages except for sign languages. Recently a variety of countries have begun projects in sign language as well. That has not yet been the case in the Netherlands. We have started to consider the possibilities of starting a similar project in the Netherlands so that Deaf people who find written language difficult to understand can comprehend it in the language of their hearts: Dutch Sign Language. Via a sign language translation we, as Deaf people, can understand that what is written in the Bible is also applicable to us.
It is our long range goal to have both the Old and New Testaments translated. That is a incredible amount of work, but we look forward to it and believe that we can bring joy to many people through such a translation.
On May 24 we held a brainstorming and information day in Utrecht.
